Linear Ball Bearing Slides: Duty-Matched Bearing Selection for Packaging and Automation

Linear Ball Bearing Slides: Duty-Matched Bearing Selection for Packaging and Automation

Linear ball bearing slides bought on bore size alone fail early under high duty cycles, dust and heat. This solution matches the bearing family to the duty - double-circuit LMK for life, sealed LMUU for contamination, SC plain bushes for 200 C heat - with computed L10 life before you order.

: 28,840

L10 = (C/P)³ × 10⁶ — C = 2,350 N, P = 500 N

What buyers actually struggle with

Linear ball bearing slides fail in three predictable ways when they are bought on bore size alone. Run a single-circuit bearing at high duty cycles and the shafts score, sliding gets gritty, and replacement becomes a scheduled line-down event. Run an open bearing in sawdust or stone dust and the ball circuit gums up long before its catalog life. And run any ball bearing near 150-200 degrees C and the grease carbonizes within weeks, whatever the spec sheet promised at room temperature.

Impact on your operation: unscheduled stops on packaging or woodworking lines, shaft replacement hidden inside bearing repairs, and repeated service visits on machines sold into harsh environments.

Our engineering solution

Match the bearing family to the duty instead of defaulting to one catalog page. LMK double-length bearings add a second ball recirculation circuit, extending rated travel life by roughly 60% for high-cycle slides. LMUU sealed extended-length bearings combine double-lip seals with a labyrinth groove and 40% more balls for dusty, shock-loaded travel. SC plain bushes replace the ball circuit with PTFE-impregnated bronze where heat or contamination kills grease. KH pillow-block housings make retrofit installation a bolt-on job with self-aligning tolerance up to 3 degrees.

Life you can computeDynamic ratings from 1,370 N (LMF16UU) to 2,350 N (LMK16UU) feed straight into the L10 life formula - check your own numbers in the calculator below.
Contamination defenseDouble-lip seals and labyrinth grooves cut dust ingress by about 95% versus open types on LMUU series.
Heat without dramaSC series plain bushes run to 200 degrees C with no ball circuit to carbonize and no grease schedule to maintain.

What this buys you

  • Service intervals planned on computed L10 life instead of gut feel.
  • Fewer line-down events on packaging, textile and woodworking equipment.
  • One supplier across 3-80 mm bores, flanged and open types, sealed and plain variants.

Case 1 - Packaging machine carriage slides (Netherlands)

Who / what: a packaging OEM runs LMK16UU double-length bearings on product pusher slides cycling 40 strokes per minute. Problem: single-circuit open bearings scored their hardened shafts within a season under continuous duty.

Before: bearing replacement on every line at the 6-month service; shaft scoring required polishing.
After: LMK dual-circuit bearings (2,350 N dynamic) extended the service interval to 18 months with clean shafts.

Where the numbers come from: the OEM's planned-maintenance records across three production years.

Source: OEM maintenance planner records referenced at the annual supply review.

Case 2 - Woodworking CNC retrofit (Canada)

Who / what: a cabinet-shop retrofit required bearings that survive sawdust without air purging. Problem: open LM bearings gummed up with resin-bound dust.

Before: weekly cleaning + monthly relube; one seized bearing per quarter.
After: LMUU double-lip sealed bearings cut dust ingress by about 95% per spec; cleaning moved to monthly, and no seizure in 14 months.

Where the numbers come from: shop maintenance log kept by the retrofit contractor, plus the bearing's published ingress-reduction test basis.

Source: contractor's maintenance log reviewed at reorder; LMUU sealed-design specification.

Case 3 - High-temperature foundry conveyor (South Korea)

Who / what: a foundry needed slides near a 180°C zone where grease-carbonized ball bearings failed fast. Problem: ball circuits lost grease within weeks.

Before: ball bearing replacement every 3-4 weeks near the heat zone.
After: SC20 PTFE-bronze plain bushes (rated to 200°C, no ball circuit to carbonize) ran 5 months before scheduled swap.

Where the numbers come from: foundry maintenance swap-out tickets before and after the change.

How is linear bearing life calculated?

Ball-type linear bearings follow L10 = (C/P)^3 x 1 million revolutions, where C is the basic dynamic load rating and P the equivalent load. Halving the load roughly triples travel life, which is why the calculator above starts from your real payload.

When should I choose LMK over LM?

Choose LMK double-length bearings when the slide runs at high duty cycles: two ball circuits spread load over a longer contact zone, giving about 60% longer rated travel life than a standard single-length bearing at the same bore.

Are sealed bearings (LMUU) worth it in dusty shops?

In sawdust, stone dust or recycling environments, yes. Double-lip seals plus a labyrinth groove block most particulate from reaching the circuit, and the extended sleeve adds ball count for higher capacity.

What works above 120 degrees C where grease fails?

Switch families: SC plain bushes use a PTFE-impregnated bronze sleeve without a ball circuit, rated to 200 degrees C and tolerant of shock and contamination.

Can KH pillow blocks replace press-fit bearings?

Yes. KH units ship with the LM bearing pre-installed in a self-aligning cast housing (up to 3 degrees compensation), so retrofitting needs no press tooling and bearing swaps take minutes.
