Why Packaging Quality Determines Whether the Product Arrives Usable
A precision linear guideway manufactured to 7 µm tolerance can be rendered useless by a 30-day ocean shipment if packaging is inadequate. The primary threats during international shipping are corrosion from humidity and temperature cycling, mechanical damage from vibration and impact, and misalignment from improper stacking. The cost of proper export packaging is typically 1–3% of the product value; the cost of replacing a corroded or damaged shipment, including project delays, is 10–20 times that amount.
Anti-Corrosion Protection Strategy
Marine shipping exposes cargo to humidity cycles of 30–95% RH as the container passes through climate zones. Condensation forms on metal surfaces when the dew point is reached, initiating corrosion within 48 hours.
VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) Packaging
VCI packaging is the primary defense. VCI molecules vaporize from the packaging film or paper and adsorb onto metal surfaces, forming a molecular barrier that inhibits the electrochemical corrosion reaction. For GCr15 bearing steel, use VCI polyethylene film (500 g/m² minimum) wrapped with heat-shrink or vacuum seal. The VCI protection is effective for 12–24 months in a sealed package.
Desiccants
Place silica gel or clay desiccant bags inside the VCI barrier at a ratio of 1 g per 1 liter of enclosed volume. For a standard guideway crate of 0.5 m³, use 500 g of desiccant distributed in 2–3 bags. Include a humidity indicator card visible through a window in the packaging so the receiver can verify that humidity stayed below 50% RH during transit.
Coating
For components shipped without VCI film (e.g., large rails over 3,000 mm), apply a rust-preventive oil film by dipping or brushing. Use a dewatering type rust preventive that displaces moisture from the surface. The oil film should be 5–10 µm thick and remain tack-free to avoid attracting particulate contamination.
Mechanical Protection: Vibration and Impact
Individual Component Packaging
Each guideway rail is wrapped in VCI film, then placed in a fitted corrugated sleeve with end caps. Carriages are packaged separately in individual boxes with foam cradle supports that prevent the carriage from sliding on the rail during transit - a loose carriage sliding on an unprotected rail will indent the raceway within hours of vibration exposure.
Case Construction
For export shipments, use plywood cases (not solid wood, which requires ISPM-15 heat treatment and is restricted by some importing countries). Case construction: 12 mm exterior-grade plywood, with 50×50 mm pine battens at 400 mm centers. Internal cushioning uses closed-cell EVA foam (density 30 kg/m³) at 20 mm thickness on all six faces. The foam compresses to absorb vibration energy while maintaining positional stability.
Container Loading
Load cases onto the container floor with dunnage (wooden bearers) at 600 mm spacing. Secure cases against longitudinal movement using air bags inflated between the cargo and container wall. A standard 20-foot container accommodates approximately 8–12 pallets of linear motion products, depending on case dimensions. Do not stack heavy cases on top of precision component cases - the compressive load can deform the case and transfer force to the product inside.
Documentation Accompanying Each Shipment
Each export case should contain or have attached:
- Packing list: Itemized by part number, quantity, and lot number, matched to the commercial invoice.
- Material certificates: Mill certs with heat numbers for all steel components.
- Inspection reports: Dimensional and hardness reports per lot, signed by the supplier's QC inspector.
- Country of origin certificate: Required for customs clearance and tariff determination.
- VCI and desiccant installation record: Date of packaging, desiccant weight, and VCI film batch number, to support any quality claim related to transit corrosion.
Receiving Inspection on Arrival
Upon container arrival, inspect the humidity indicator card before opening the VCI packaging. If the card reads above 50% RH, open immediately and inspect for corrosion. If below 50% RH, the VCI barrier is intact and components can remain in packaging for up to 30 days before unpacking. Document the container condition, case condition, and humidity reading with photographs - this evidence is essential for any insurance claim related to transit damage.
